Three Junior Bachelor of Science in Agriculture students major in Plant Pathology namely Jerico M. Apan, Arjen Augrex C. Benig, and Jeniecel M. Teofilo were recipients of the Philippine Phytopathological Society-Southern Mindanao Division (PPS-SMD)-BAYER Crop Science Scholarship Grant.

The awarding of the scholarship package and signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was held on November 17, 2021 at the CA-Audio Visual Room. It was attended by the PPS-SMD Board of Directors, student-grantees, and faculty members of the College of Agriculture.  Dr. Julius Jerome G. Ele, CA Dean, thanked the visitors and sponsors and congratulated the student- grantees. He emphasized the importance of the industry and local society partnership to help financially challenged but deserving students finish their chosen degree in USM through scholarship grant. The OSA Director Prof. Yvonne V. Saliling represented and delivered the inspirational message of the University President during the program. Past presidents of PPS-SMD and retired professors of USM, Professor Emeritus Dr. Naomi G. Tangonan, and Dr. Raquel B. Evangelista also graced the event.

Recipients of the PPS SMD Bayer Scholarship Grant are Mr. Jerico M. Apan, Mr. Arjen Augrex C. Benig, and Ms. Jeniecel M. Teofilo, 3-BSA students major in Plant Pathology, College of Agriculture, USM, Kabacan, Cotabato.

The scholarship grant is regularly given by the PPS-SMD to the Plant Pathology students through monthly stipend and thesis support. Each student grantee received a laptop unit with complete accessories and monthly internet allowance. This program is part of the PPS-SMD’s commitment to the CA-USM to make agriculture education more accessible to students with limited economic means. Furthermore, this is in support to the new normal learning modality which is computer-mediated.

Dr. Julius Jerome G. Ele (Dean, College of Agriculture), Mr. Jerico Apan, Ms. Jeniecel Teofilo, Mr. Argen Augrex Benig, and Dr. Tamie C. Solpot (Head, Division of Plant Pathology) received the laptop units donated by PPS-SMD and BAYER.

The PPS-SMD is a regional chapter of the Philippine Phytopathological Society with its official office at the University of Southern Mindanao and pioneered by the USM Plant Pathology Professors. The current PPS-SMD President is Dr. Dennice G. Catambacan, Head of Plant Pathology Research Department · Tagum Agricultural Development Company, Inc (TADECO).
